Pre-proposals open until 24 October 2025

The Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission has launched the Apple Horticulture and Postharvest Research Priorities 2026. This grant focuses on research that improves product quality, labor efficiency, and sustainability in apple orchards and postharvest processes. Special attention is given to projects that optimize labor use, enhance fruit quality, and reduce losses during storage.

Sustainable production and quality

Research that contributes to stable yields and consistent fruit quality is given the highest priority. This includes projects aimed at further automation of pruning and harvesting, improved water and nutrient management, and better mitigation of stress factors such as drought or frost. Studies on pollination, fruit development, and calcium-related disorders are also highly encouraged.

Postharvest efficiency

The commission seeks proposals that reduce waste and quality loss after harvest. Projects may focus on new methods to assess maturity and storability, innovative sanitation and cleaning processes, or sustainable ways to prevent fungal growth. Solutions that improve food safety and reduce the need for re-packing directly support more profitable and responsible supply chains.

Climate and technology

Research into the effects of seasonal and weather changes, the use of netting systems against sunburn or birds, and precision harvest technologies helps growers adapt to changing conditions. There is also strong interest in applying sensors, data, and robotics to reduce manual labor and maintain high fruit quality.

From research to practice with Orchard of the Future

Orchard of the Future shares this focus on innovation and knowledge exchange in fruit cultivation. By linking research results to practice, we accelerate technological progress and strengthen the sector with greater efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.
