International collaboration between OSU and Orchard of the Future

In Oregon, Dutch and American growers, researchers and technology companies came together for an open exchange. Orchard of the Future and Oregon State University brought knowledge and practice together, right in the orchard. Not to dream about the future, but to talk about what works today. Labor is scarce, the weather unpredictable and technology evolves faster than people can keep up with. Yet, simplicity and calm proved to be the foundation for progress.

Simplicity that keeps performing

The strength of Oregon lay in simplicity. Robots that do one task well turned out to be more valuable than systems trying to do everything at once. Weeds that stay away. Transport that keeps moving. Detection that still works in rain and wind, predictability built confidence. First make sure it works, then expand.

Data that guides decisions

Data was discussed with a practical mindset. Not what you can measure, but what helps you make the right decision today. Should I irrigate? Can spraying wait? Sensors with clear thresholds provided instant direction. Anything that required too much explanation simply disappeared from the workflow.

Organization as a quiet driver

Another thing that stood out was organization. Logical walking routes, names everyone understood – they created calm and safety. Technology built on that foundation with signals and feedback that were immediately clear. This naturally fostered collaboration between people and technology.

Small steps, big progress

The same applied to data integration. Starting small proved best. Companies that chose open standards and simple connections remained flexible. All-in-one systems may sound efficient but often stall in practice. Small, well-working links turned out to be the most sustainable.

Progress that adds up

Real progress rarely comes all at once. One hour less work. Fewer mistakes. Quicker decisions. Small improvements that add up to lasting gains, that was the common thread in every orchard.

“They were very interested in our Extension programs and how Extension acts as a bridge between fundamental research, applied research and direct impact on farmers,” said Davidson of OSU. “That was something they took away as a big positive.”

Learning in practice, moving forward together

The collaboration between OSU and Orchard of the Future showed that true progress doesn’t happen behind a desk, but in the field. Where people, machines and mud meet, knowledge takes root. Orchard of the Future continues to connect, learn and share, so the orchard of tomorrow can start growing today.
